Just 45 minutes off the coast of Bali lies a wilder, rougher, and more untouched island - welcome to Nusa Penida 🏝️.
It’s the largest of the three Nusa islands (along with Lembongan and Ceningan) and has become a favourite for those looking beyond Bali’s cafés and crowds. Penida is all about raw natural beauty - with its cliff drops, turquoise bays, white-sand beaches, and viewpoints that make you stop and stare.
But Nusa Penida isn’t your average beach getaway.
There are no Ubers, no malls, no smooth highways - just long, bumpy roads, coastal winds, and landscapes that feel straight out of a movie. You’ll spend your day chasing views, climbing cliffs, and cooling off at quiet beaches.

If Bali is where you relax - Nusa Penida is where you explore.
And trust us, it’s worth every pothole.
The best way to reach Nusa Penida is by fast boat from Sanur Port, and we had pre-booked ours via Klook for around ₹1,100 per person (≈210K IDR) with Maruti Express. The boat was clean, well-organised, and took about 45-50 minutes to reach the island.
Now, here’s the catch - give yourself buffer time. We got delayed due to early morning rain, left our hotel a bit late, and ended up running with our backpacks to catch the boat. Thankfully, we made it - wet shoes, skipped breakfast, and all 😅
At Sanur, the check-in process includes:
Going to the operator’s office to collect your boarding pass & ID tag
Walking 5 mins to the dock
Scanning your ticket
Boarding directly through ankle-deep water - so wear sandals!
🚤 How to Reach Nusa Penida - Our Boat Story

Even though our scheduled time was 7:30 AM, the boat left closer to 8:00 AM, which is pretty normal.
On arrival at Banjar Nyuh Harbour (Nusa Penida), we skipped the scooters (too risky in wet weather) and used a pre-arranged private cab (750K IDR for 10 hours) - which turned out to be a great decision, considering Penida’s roads are steep, narrow, and super bumpy.
🗺️ East vs West - Planning Your Route in Nusa Penida
➤ East Nusa Penida
Known for photo spots & cliff views. You’ll find dreamy landscapes.
– ⛱️ Diamond Beach
– 🌴 Rumah Pohon Treehouse
– 🌊 Atuh Beach
➤ West Nusa Penida
Home to the most iconic sights and natural formations:
– 🦖 Kelingking Beach
– 🌊 Broken Beach
– 🌀 Angel’s Billabong
Nusa Penida is bigger and wilder than most people expect. Roads are steep, spots are far apart, and internet is patchy. That’s why most travellers divide their trip into two parts.

🌅 East Nusa Penida - Cliffs, Swings & Treehouse Views
We started our Penida journey on the East side - and it gave us the perfect mix of effort, thrill, and reward.
⛱️ Diamond Beach - Steep, Stunning & Worth It
This beach looks unreal from the cliff - turquoise water, white sand, and that famous diamond-shaped rock. We went halfway down the stairs carved into the cliff. It gets tricky toward the bottom, but even from halfway, the view is next level.
A short drive away is the Treehouse at Thousand Island Viewpoint. It’s a famous photo spot where you’re given a token number and 2 minutes per person to click photos.
Tickets cost 75K IDR, and the walk down takes about 10-15 minutes. It’s not hard, but climbing back up in Bali humidity will test your energy 😅
We passed the wait time at a nearby cliff viewpoint - peaceful, breezy, and just as beautiful.

There’s also a popular ocean swing here - listed at 200K IDR (~₹1,100), but we managed to negotiate it down to 100K IDR (~₹550). Totally worth it for the photo and the fun! 🎢📸
🌴 Rumah Pohon Treehouse - Epic View
🦖 West Nusa Penida - The T-Rex Cliff & Coastal Wonders
After wrapping up our East side by early afternoon and recharging with a quick lunch, we decided to continue exploring - this time, the West coast of Nusa Penida.
The roads were still narrow and rough, but the landscapes just kept getting better.
📍 Kelingking Beach - The Iconic Cliff Everyone Talks About
This is the photo spot of Bali - and it lives up to the hype. The cliff at Kelingking looks like a giant T-Rex head jutting out into the ocean, and the water below is the bluest we’ve seen anywhere.
We tried hiking down but stopped halfway - the trail is steep, sandy, and sharp. The view from the top though? 10/10. You’ll easily spend 30-45 minutes here just clicking photos and taking it all in.
💡 If you plan to hike all the way, wear proper shoes and carry water. The climb back up is intense.

🌊 Broken Beach & Angel’s Billabong - Nature at Work
Next stop: Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong - two coastal wonders just 5 minutes apart.
Broken Beach is a round cliff with an arch that lets the ocean flow into a hidden bay. You can’t go down, but walking around the rim gives amazing views.
Angel’s Billabong is a natural rock pool. If you arrive at low tide, the water is still and clear - like a natural infinity pool. It’s not safe to swim, but perfect to sit and watch the waves crash nearby.

We spent just one night on Nusa Penida, and while we managed to cover both East and West, we had to keep things moving. If you’re short on time, this plan works - but it does get tiring.
Honestly? We’d recommend:
✅ 2 nights on Nusa Penida
Day 1: East (Diamond Beach, Treehouse, Atuh)
Day 2: West (Kelingking, Broken Beach, Crystal Bay)
Optional Day 3: North or Central (snorkelling, waterfalls, or diving)
This would give you time to enjoy the views without rushing, skip the midday heat, and maybe even visit Lembongan or Labuan Amuk Bay, which we missed.
📝 Was One Night Enough?
Nusa Penida wasn’t the most comfortable part of our Bali trip - the roads were tough, the sun was strong, and the day was long.
But it gave us something special - that feeling of standing on the edge of something wild and beautiful.
From cliff views that made us pause, to hidden beaches we had to earn - this island showed us how adventure and peace can exist in the same frame.
If you're planning a Bali trip, don’t just make Penida a day tour.
Stay a little longer. Let it surprise you. It’s not just a place to see - it’s a place to feel.
❤️ Nusa Penida Leaves a Mark
“Some places show you sights.
Nusa Penida makes you feel something.”
- and that’s why we’ll remember it longer than most.
